SpringWorks Festival 2012 is Stratford and Perth County's newest cultural event: an indie theatre and arts festival. In its second year, we are returning to Factory163, an exciting new alternative performance space. Accomplished festival and fringe perennials, budding artists, regional and touring companies all come together to share a rich array of performances. Our eclectic programming has something for audiences of all ages. All shows are approximately one hour long. Local and regional visual artists also display their work at Factory163 in the South Gallery. SpringWorks Festival 2012 is raw and refined, edgy and elegant, a place to experience new works by award-winning Canadian playwrights, artists, and performers all in one week!

Mirror of the Times: Factory Arts String Quartet

June 3, 2012
6-8:30pm

In the final installment of INNERchamber for this season the Factory Arts String Quartet returns with special guest pianist Heather Taves to highlight two composers from vastly different backgrounds.  The decidedly sunny String Quartet No. 3 by Felix Mendelssohn reflects a privileged and carefree existence and upbringing. This truly brilliant music showcases great virtuosity while demonstrating Mendelssohn's characteristic facility with light and energetic textures.   When almost the same age as Mendelssohn, Dmitri Shostakovich lived in a completely different time and place.  World War II loomed, while the Stalinist regime instilled fear in composers of the day.  This quintet combines intense drama and lyricism, with the wit and irony through which Shostakovich expressed his private truth. Does music reflect the place in time during which it was composed? With these two great works, we'll let you be the judge.

Factory Arts String Quartet

Andrew Chung - violin

Julie Baumgartel - violin

Joshua Greenlaw - viola

Ben Bolt-Martin - cello

Heather Taves - piano
